A little Renaissance drama for you. Three expressive golden suns, manuscript stars, and curling clouds in staggered rows on a deep blue background. The original ink lines and aged color variations give the design the character of a centuries-old book, while a new repeating arrangement brings the artwork into a contemporary textile pattern.

The source is the three-suns illustration in Pierre Boaistuau’s Histoires prodigieuses, a manuscript dated 1559 in the Wellcome Collection. Dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I, the volume gathered accounts of marvels and extraordinary happenings and was illustrated with gold-and-color miniatures.

This design preserves the illustration while removing the surrounding frame and page margins and arranging it into a new textile repeat.
